Scare you, scare me

It’s spooky time! It’s with quite a huge tinge of regret that I’ve to say I’ve never celebrated Halloween in all my 16 years on this sometimes-great-but-occasionally-full-of-stupid-idiots-but-I-kind-of-love-it-anyway earth. It’s also with another huge tinge of regret that I’ve to confess I’m no longer sweet 16. But whether I’m 16 or 60, I’ll always have room for candy, just without the trick-or-treating. I’m sure my teeth think otherwise, but they don’t get to vote.
Since I don’t celebrate Halloween, let’s talk about spooky movies instead. I love October because that’s when the spooky movie marathons start on TV. We get the marathons in August too when the Hungry Ghost Festival is in full swing. Spooky spooky spooky!
So what do you think are the ingredients for a good spooky movie? Note that I’m not talking about horror movies because my idea of a horror flick will be something like Titanic. So annoyingly long and horrifying. I mean, just sink the damn ship already so I can go and pee.
I don’t know if me being Asian has anything to do with it but I think Asian movies in the horror genre are the spookiest and most disturbing of the lot. Hollywood spooky movies just make me laugh most of the time. Not quite the intended effect, I would imagine. It’s probably quite a cliche but I really think Ringu is the spookiest movie I’ve ever seen. There’s something very disturbing about the look of the dead bodies, the photographs and of course Sadako. Goodness, that lurch of hers will forever be ingrained in my mind. And that jarring soundtrack! I’ve seen the American version and while I think it’s quite a notch above the usual Hollywood fare, it’s nowhere near the original.
So which spooky movie is your favourite?

I’ve only seen the American version, but I’ll be honest – it creeped me the hell out. I’m not generally a fan of horror flicks, but that one is up there. When she came out of the TV, I think I screamed like a girl.
Happy Halloween.
I cant watch scary movies. Im too chicken and always end up with nightmares.
Blaire Witch Project is the only movie that’s ever left me spooked for weeks.
Wolf, I generally don’t have much faith in Hollywood remakes of Asian films (they totally thrashed Shall We Dance) so I was expecting the American version to suck. I was pretty surprised that it didn’t although they changed the story quite a bit. If you thought Samara was creepy, wait till you see Sadako…
Mel, most of the time I watch it between a fingers or from behind my pillow.
Jason, that movie made me giddy! Haven’t they ever heard of steady cam?!
Even then… (covered face and all) I always think someone is in my house or going to kill me after a scary movie.
The last scary movie I watched was SEVEN. Im still not over that!
I’m not much into the scary movie thing. But I did actually watch Ishtar, the most maligned movie of all time. Yeah, pretty scary stuff.
I’m with Meleah on this one. I can’t watch scary movies and if I do, it’s got to be on a bright sunny afternoon, with all the windows and doors open and the entire neighbourhood in audience with me … LOL!
But that said and done, my personal best is the original exorcist, I didn’t sleep for months on end after watching that movie and now that I’m actually recounting it here, I’m probably not going to be able to sleep for another few months. Damn you Liz for making me remember … LOL!
Mel, I LOVE Seven! Kevin Spacey’s one of my favourite actors.
Michael, I’ve never heard of that one. Will have to IMDB it.
Nick, oh yes I forgot all about the Exorcist. That one was pretty scary too! And to think you even had a supernatural experience when you’re such a scaredy cat! :P
