Here's one I used to use: Assuming you have caller ID or even if you don't - When the phone rings, pick it up and say "Hi, may I speak to Fred" (or Sally, or whatever)- When the caller responds, regardless of what they say, just simply ask again "Is Fred there?" They'll say 'no' and you say, "Do you know where he is?" they respond - you can keep this up for as long as you want.
